What affects tolerances of compression springs? |

| All types of springs, including compression springs, have different designs och spring material which affects the spring tolerances. There are a number of different types of coil springs. For example compression springs, tension springs and torsion springs among others. The different types and designs of the springs have different spring tolerances. The spring material is one of the most important factors and therefore affects the geometric spring tolerances since the accuracy of the tools and their positions are high nowdays. The spring material properties vary to a greater or lesser extent between material heats and material manufacturing batches. The consequence is that spring tolerances smaller than what the material allows lead to extra control costs. Coil springs (for example compression springs) are given its geometrical shape by plastic deformation of the spring material. During plastic forming, the material springs back to a certain extent and residual stresses are created. This can possibly be compared with forging, but definitely not with machining. The plastic deformation and the spring back depends on the extent of deformation, friction, type of stresses applied (shear and normal) and the elastic and plastic properties of the spring material. For coil spring tolerances, we recommend use of the DIN standard this is the standard that best reflects real life conditions. The best is to use a spring supplier that follows the spring material and process capability regularly with statistical methods. The supplier shall also provide knowledge and information about type of distributions, probabilities, Cpk values and other statistics for the factors/measurements in spring specifications. |
